Derasat and the UNDP launched the 2018 Bahrain Human Development Report (BHDR) on 27th November, 2018 at the Four Seasons Hotel at an event attended by government officials, the private sector and academic experts.
Following welcome speeches by Derasat Chairman, Dr Abdulla Al Khalifa and the UNDP Resident Representative and UN Resident Coordinator, Mr Amin ElSharkawi, the opening speech was delivered by Mr Adel Abdullatif, Administrator for the UNDP. This was followed by a key note presentation by Mr Philippe Legrain, a senior visiting fellow at the London School of Economics and Political Science, UK. The event’s final session comprised a panel discussion with Dr Omar AlUbaydli, Acting Director of Research as panel chair and with contributions from panelists, HE Faeqa Al Saleh, Minister of Health, Dr Jawaher Al-Mudhahki, Chief Executive of the Education and Training Quality Authority (BQA), Ms Tala Fakhro, Director of Strategy and Market Intelligence at the Economic Development Board and Dr Craig Naumann, lead author of the HDR and an Independent Strategic Planning Advisor.
It was noted that Bahrain has made substantial progress towards achieving both its ambitious Economic Vision 2030 targets. The Bahrain Human Development Report, produced by the Bahrain Centre for Strategic, International and Energy Studies (Derasat) in partnership with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), highlighted the Kingdom’s success in diversifying its economy and in recognising the importance of environmental concerns.
