As part of supporting the Kingdom of Bahrain’s national strategies aimed at achieving net-zero emissions by 2060, the Bahrain Center for Strategic, International, and Energy Studies (Derasat) organized a specialized intellectual dialogue this morning titled “Future Pathways for Nuclear Energy in the Kingdom of Bahrain.” The event gathered a distinguished group of experts and academics, along with representatives from national institutions concerned with the energy sector, diplomatic figures, and several interested participants.
The dialogue focused on examining the vital role of nuclear energy in supporting national efforts toward diversifying the energy mix and reducing carbon emissions, in line with Bahrain’s National Energy Strategy and the Net-Zero Plan. Discussions also explored the strategic opportunities provided by international cooperation in the field of peaceful nuclear energy, particularly in light of the recent Memorandum of Understanding signed between the Kingdom of Bahrain and the United States of America.
Among the participants were Dr. Mahmood Ibrahim, Director of Strategy, Carbon Emissions Reduction, and Energy Efficiency at Bapco Energies; Dr. Abdullah Al Abbasi, Director of the Energy and Environment Studies Program at Derasat; and Dr. Mohammed Ali bin Shams, Head of Department and Associate Professor of Chemical Engineering at the University of Bahrain. During the discussion, the speakers addressed the prospects for integrating nuclear energy into the national energy mix, key challenges and opportunities associated with next-generation nuclear reactor technologies, as well as the importance of building national capabilities and strengthening research partnerships to ensure the success of these strategic orientations.
Participants affirmed that adopting innovative solutions in the peaceful nuclear energy sector constitutes a key pillar for achieving both environmental and economic sustainability. They emphasized that this direction supports Bahrain’s role as an active partner in international efforts to combat climate change and to fulfill its climate commitments within the framework of net-zero objectives. The dialogue concluded with Derasat reaffirming its commitment to continue organizing specialized intellectual forums that contribute scientific insights to support national plans in the fields of energy, environment, and sustainable development.
