NATO’s Role in Combating Terrorism: What Lessons Learned?

NATO, founded in 1949, is essentially a defensive organization. However, global and regional transformations, especially since the end of the Cold War in 1990 to date, have created new security threats; in the forefront, the terrorism expressed in the events of September 11, 2001, which was a formidable challenge for NATO, that targeted the United States, the largest member of the alliance, to the point that prompted a US official to say, “Either NATO develops or it ends.”
