Gulf-Iran relations are sometimes characterized by contradictions. In times when we witness numerous tensions in relations because of some controversial issues, we note that there are distinct economic relations between Iran and some Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries.

The Konrad Adenauer Stiftung (KAS) organized a conference in the Kempinski Dead Sea Resort in Jordan entitled, Between Europe and the Gulf: Reconsidering Strategic Interest in the Middle East between the dates of December 15-17, 2013. The participant list included various reputable European and Middle Eastern research and academic institutions. The three-day event covered a wide variety of developments in the Middle East.

The conference aims to refine our characterization and improve our understanding of the transformations currently underway, their future paths and their likely consequences, both regionally and globally. It also seeks to develop a shared, pragmatic understanding of regional security and stability, in turn contributing to global security.
