Derasat Holds Think Talk on AI Risk Governance
Bahrain Center for Strategic, International and Energy Studies (Derasat) organized a Think Talk titled “AI Risk Governance.” The event featured Dr. Amal Salem Shaheen, Director of Human Resources at Bahrain Polytechnic, and Dr. Yousif Mohamed Mothanna is the Director of Cyber Governance at the National Cybersecurity Center, Non-Resident Fellow at Derasat Center. The discussion was moderated by Dr. Omar Al Ubaydli, Director of Studies and Research at Derasat.
The discussion examined the current state of artificial intelligence adoption across institutions and the wide-ranging opportunities these technologies offer for enhancing institutional performance, improving operational efficiency, and supporting decision-making. It also addressed the risks and challenges associated with the expanding deployment of AI technologies, as well as approaches to managing and mitigating such risks through comprehensive governance frameworks that promote the safe and responsible use of artificial intelligence.
Participants further discussed key issues relating to cybersecurity, information security, data protection, and privacy, in addition to the institutional, regulatory, and human dimensions associated with the adoption of AI technologies. In this context, they explored the importance of developing effective institutional policies and procedures, as well as building the necessary internal capabilities to enable organizations to keep pace with rapid technological developments and strengthen their ability to anticipate and effectively address emerging risks.
The discussion also highlighted the importance of establishing institutional practices grounded in reliability, transparency, and accountability, thereby ensuring an appropriate balance between harnessing the advanced capabilities of artificial intelligence and adhering to safeguards and standards governing information security, data protection, and privacy. Participants emphasized the significance of clear regulatory and governance frameworks in strengthening institutional readiness to navigate the accelerating transformation in AI applications and in supporting their responsible and sustainable adoption.
