There is a general strategic framework for the Russian-Western competition in the North African region, which is part of the Atlantic-Russian conflict, as it was observed growing Russian influence in that region as part of the southern front of the conflict between Russia and NATO, which increased in tension following the Russian intervention in the Syrian crisis.
