What Does the Partnership Between DERASAT and Alba Mean?
On 27 August 2025, Aluminium Bahrain (Alba) and the Bahrain Center for Strategic, International and Energy Studies (Derasat) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to establish a partnership focused on advancing research and collaboration in the areas of energy, innovation, and sustainable development.
This partnership goes beyond a formal agreement. It reflects a shared intention to align applied research with industrial needs, particularly in critical areas such as energy planning and sustainability. The collaboration aims to support more informed decision-making by drawing on data analysis, scenario modelling, and research-based insights.
The initiative will be carried out through Derasat’sArtificial Intelligence and Renewable Energy Laboratory (AIRE Lab), which will apply mathematical models and make use of sector-relevant datasets to explore possible future developments in energy systems. The objective is to provide practical, research-informed solutions that contribute to operational improvements and support the Kingdom of Bahrain’s wider economic goals. It is worth noting that Derasat established the AIRE Lab in 2023, equipped with a Real-Time Digital Simulator to advance research on artificial intelligence and renewable energy integration.
The use of real-world data from Alba brings additional value to the research, helping to ensure that the analysis remains relevant to current challenges and opportunities in the industrial sector. This reflects an ongoing shift in Bahrain’s development approach, placing greater emphasis on innovation, strategic planning, and the use of research to inform policy and operations.
More broadly, the collaboration brings together complementary expertise from both the research and industrial sectors. It shows how national institutions can work together to develop solutions that are both evidence-based and applicable in practice. This model of cooperation is particularly important in addressing complex topics, such as energy efficiency, emissions management, and the transition to more sustainable systems.
Finally, the partnership between Derasatand Alba reflects a growing recognition of the value of joint efforts between research and industry. It highlights Bahrain’s commitment to leveraging knowledge and collaboration as tools for addressing future challenges in a thoughtful and practical manner. It also encourages a culture of cooperation that links data, analysis, and implementation in support of long-term national priorities.
