Derasat is pleased to host the second Middle East and North Africa IAEE Symposium in association with the 5th Derasat annual forum in Bahrain, themed “The Impact of Energy Transition in the MENA Region”.

DATE: 2nd & 3rd March 2022

TIME: 9.00am – 5.00pm

VENUE: Manama, Kingdom of Bahrain

OVERVIEW

The launch of the sustainable development goals (SDGs) in 2015 has institutionalized a focus toward greener energy. The Covid-19 pandemic has had a multifaceted effect on the transition toward cleaner energy. It caused unprecedented economic stress and has contributed to a breakdown in multilateral cooperation, both of which have been unfavorable for green energy. However, the pandemic created an opportunity to reconfigure the political economy of energy investments, including in renewable energy.

The MENA region is playing a central and multidimensional role in the prevailing energy transition. For several decades, it has been a major source of global energy, while its oil and gas exports have enabled many of these countries to realize high living standards. The countries of the region – whether exporters or importers of hydrocarbon resources – face the challenges associated with energy transition; namely diversifying their economies and energy mix away from dependence on fossil fuels. The demographic challenge, water scarcity, and low energy efficiency compound the challenges facing the region.

It is timely to analyze in depth the challenges facing the region in the emerging energy transition. The impact of energy on MENA societies extends well beyond the technical and economic domains. The region’s location and its endowments with energy resources – be they hydrocarbons or renewables potentials – add to its geostrategic importance. As global energy demand evolves as part of the transition to greener sources, so too will the nature of interactions between the region and the rest of the world. This forum seeks to shed light on these issues from the perspective of policymakers, businesses, and the research community.
