The Regional Developments and Their Impact on NATO’s Interests

On November 27, 2023, Jens Stoltenberg, the Secretary-General of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO), warned of the “danger of regional escalation” after drone strikes and missiles targeted American sites in both Syria and Iraq. Additionally, there were attacks on commercial ships. Stoltenberg called on Iran to restrain its proxies in the region to prevent the widening of the regional conflict. This marks the second time official statements have been issued by NATO officials since the events in Gaza began on October 7 of the current year. On October 12, Stoltenberg stated that “NATO is not a party to that conflict,” issuing a warning to Iran and Hezbollah against intervening in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict following the United States’ decision to send an aircraft carrier to the Mediterranean.
